Manga Shakespeare
« on: May 25, 2007, 01:02:57 PM »

No joke!  I'm sitting in the library as I post this, and next to me is a manga adaptation of "Hamlet"!

I gotta say, I've got mixed feelings about this.  They're keeping the original text, but the visuals have this wierd techno-knight thing going on.  It kinda looks like what would happen if Baz Lurhmann directed "Reign".

Has anyone else seen this?  Any thoughts based on first reactions?

Hm, haven't looked at it, but I know they're coming out with "Romeo x Juliet" the anime. And it's supposed to be quite good.

I can see this is a very old post but I saw it while browsing.  I work at a library and I have seen those in our graphic novel section!  Isn't that just crazy that they're making them into manga/comics?  I find it rather odd and rather lazy if someone just reads that and compares it to reading the actual novel/play.  On the other hand it may help with visuals and if someone has read the novel/play it will be a nice 'refreshing' option.  I don't know they are awfully bizarre.  I have seen some for novels like Fairenheit 451 and Sherlock Holmes as well.

Hey Melinda!

Yeah, I agree with you about that sort of "cliff's notes" thing with these versions; in "Hamlet" they actually cut out about two-thirds of the Soliliquy!  I'm sorry but at that point I'm done with it.  I agree about the new visuals, I think a cyberpunk-style version worked just fine with the dialog they did keep ::rolls eyes::.  Reminds me of Lurhman's Romeo & Juliet; like it or hate it, at least it was interesting.

Yeah I don't know I just feel like what is the point of reading it if you've never read the original novel/play.  I like manga and anime but you know when it's based on like a work of art...that gets iffy haha.  I would just feel super lazy if I read the manga version of a novel and have claimed that I have "read the novel." XD  But whatever, I guess it's preference or whatever floats your boat. It's kind of similar to watching the movie and basing your preference on that versus reading the book...
