Jon Meets the Internet
« on: March 02, 2009, 01:13:57 AM »

Hello World.

For those of you who don't know, I recently upgraded my home Internet connection to cable.  Prior to that, and pretty much since 1995, I have been working off of a dial-up connection.  You may commence gasping in horror and/or laughing at me.  Okay, enough.

So, at my comrades' recommendation and against my better judgement, I am asking my more 'Net-savvy companions to show me just what the hell everyone is finding so funny.  I am told I am now to be led through the craziness that is Internet Culture.  Well, I've got my gaudy aloha shirt and overpriced camera... lead me to the freakshow.

That's a pretty impressive length of time to use dial up.
In some ways, it's good.  In others, it's bad  - like that 9000 video, or this:
HQ

No longer will you be ignorant to stupid things people find funny.  I myself laugh at some of these things, now.
I think I've been using fast internets for... about 4 years or so.  It's pretty amazing, still.

Youtube videos are fine - but really, you can sort of find a lot those that interest you on your own.
But I'd like to say that you should join some kind of file sharing community for the things that interest you.  There are many things to be downloaded and enjoyed, with the internets.  But with that comes the need for increased hard drive space - which could be solved with a quality external hard drive.

To start you off in the excellent world of fast internets, here is a most excellent site:
http://www.tv-links.cc/
Watch many movies, shows, cartoons, anime, for free on the internets.

Here is an awesome place to get video game/sometimes anime related music:
http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks.php

Here is the place where you will turn into a sheep:
http://www.4chan.org/
Anonymous image boards.  I would say that those, and something awful ( http://www.somethingawful.com/ ) create the majority of internet funniness.
There are LOTS of online comics which cater to your specific interests, but I guess I'll share this one:
http://xkcd.com/
Wow the current one references a ton of memes - a meme is one of those things that spreads like wildfire and people suddenly find funny - like "OVER 9000!" "I herd u liek mudkipz" and "All your base are belong to us".  People say these things, and think they're funny.
To understand AYBABTU better, you could check this place out:
http://allyourbase.planettribes.gamespy.com/

If you would like to participate in more sane, less insanely fast board, I rec these:
http://www.99chan.org/
http://www.420chan.org/
POSSIBLY: http://7chan.org/
Basically, with these you take part in anonymous discussions about the things you like, while posting/looking at images related to them.

And as you're probably aware, there are fansites for all of your specific interests, and those sites usually have high-speed only content to enjoy.

And uh... I'll guess I'll share some videos I like (these 3 are all the same theme, but I put them in an order):

Here's an hour long video game show I watch every week, called NooBTooB:
http://www.youtube.com/user/tobin00

If I may get srs for a video:

If you like Smash Brothers or Sonic/Snake:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVlGm-s7Lz8#hq (Embedding disabled, limit reached)

Also, with the internets, I'll recommend trying to find "direct downloads" as opposed to "torrenting", for large files ^_^  You usually find direct downloads in file sharing-type communities.

As you may or may not be able to tell, you can never be bored with the internet, and you can do anything imaginable with it.

If you already know about some of this stuff - sorry!  If you hadn't, though, this would've been pretty enlightening.

Oh, Jon! For biting, lightning fast humor about video games, may I HIGHLY recommend the game reviews of Zero Punctuation, available via The Escapist. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation

I know your base is more musical, but I'm sure there are at least a couple games you may recognize if you flip through the archives. Ben Croshaw is smart, and very witty. Some of the visual gags interspersed with his commentary are brilliant. This has almost become a weekly habit for me.

Wow... thanks guys.  I get the feeling that this will all prove quite enlightening... or drive me to a psychotic episode.  Either way there'll be a lot of laughing involved.  Can't wait to get started.

the 3rd strike torunament I didn't exactly understand why I was watchign until that last combo... cinema-worthy.

4chan I've known by reputation for a long time... a few friends have shown me various... "interesting" bits.  If someone could explain what "sage" means, I'd be appreciative.

The SF cartoon brings back memories from right before the Saturday-morning cartoon industry went completely to hell.

I'm a huge fan of XCKD.  I have no idea what the abbreviation stands for, but I like it for nothing more than I can tune in on any random day and be completely caught up.

Later Years I feel like I know just from everyone talking about it at practice.  I chuckle every time I pass the Blanka Salon on my way downtown.

Tom... I thought over 9000 was a damage reference from Final Fantasy... why did you have to show me otherwise???

Thanks for the reference material folks.  I've got more to page through.

I just watched the SF tourney vid.  I'm certain I've seen it before - unless this has been done on multiple occasions.  Is "parry" not in other SF games?  Because I think I'm interested in this version, now.  Amazing video.

4chan is crap, by the way.  I can't stand it, but I adore 99chan and 420chan - smaller communities, actual conversation, less jerks.  Also slower, which is a good thing.

For any *chan (or internets?) related term, I think Encyclopedia Dramatica is a good place to check.  Here's a link to the article for sage:
http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Sage

Or to just copy and paste from the beginning of it:
"Apart from being a versatile but unfunny herb, sage is a word originating from 2chan. Sage (pronounced sah-gay by Wapanese faggots and sayj by /b/tards) is used to reply to a post without bumping it. It's done by putting it within the e-mail field and does not push the post to the top.

Since then, its been ported to all the other chans and is used to both bump and express displeasure to the post being replied to.

The word itself comes from the Japanese word, ??????"sageru", (sah-gay-roo) meaning, 'to lower.' However, some argue that nobody really gives a shit. Amen /b/rother! "

I would say their pronunciation is wrong, though.  I'd say "geh" if I were trying to pronounce it proper.

Parrying is unique to Street Fighter 3.  It allows you to take an attack without sustaining any damage.  There's an element in Street Fighter 4 called "Focus Attack" that can be used in a similar manner, but it doesn't work the same way.

Parrying was also in Capcom vs. SNK under the "P" Groove.
