Some stuff
« on: June 15, 2009, 03:41:53 PM »

So, my one year "anniversary" with Beth is coming up, and as a surprise I made her a few things.

First thing I actually finished was this Star Wars necklace. It's made with nickel-silver over a layer of black plexiglass, put together with epoxy and sanded like crazy. It was slightly more complicated than I expected. >.> It's still not perfect, but any more filing and I'm scared I'll end up making it worse. xP

Since we both like creepy things, I wanted to make a bangle that looked like a hand around her wrist. Still in progress, as I want to actually make it look like a hand before baking it. Made with super sculpey wrapped around a tin foil base.

Also still in progress is a necklace version of the boss key from Wind Waker. I've got a lot of work left on this one. T^T Made with brass rods and tubing and spray paint.

As cheesy as it is, I'm also making a lock necklace to match the key. Of course, since the boss keys in WW don't correspond to any specific-shaped lock, I had to make up a design. Also brass and spray paint.

For anyone interested, we're also going to the zoo that day. And I bought us tickets to go see the Final Fantasy Distant Worlds concert that happens to be the next day. :D Now, hopefully I can get all this other stuff done by Wednesday...

Very nice of you, sir.  Some good work, too!  I think she'll be happy. :)

What do you use for working the metal?

Coping saw with disposable blades, assorted files, sandpaper, and of course safety glasses. :D

Ergh.. I'm scared I may have ruined the key.. the paint for the eye peeled off even after applying clear nail polish to seal it. >.< Going to try just using red nail polish for the color. Or maybe a sticker? XD

Just droppin' in to say: this is frikin sweet.  Awesome work Tom.  YOU WILL REPORT AND SHOW ALL FINISHED AWESOMENESS.

Also, I feel cool that I recognised what all the stuff (except the hand?) was.

Haha, Tom, that's some pretty badass metal work!  I dig it.  I'm also totally in awe and geeking over the Rebel necklace.  I think you should sell those things online.

Alrighty, I didn't manage to finish everything on time, but she was still completely floored by all of it. xP

I managed to get a better pic of the Rebel necklace:

I finished the bangle, though it doesn't look as much like a hand as I would like it to.

Unfortunately, it didn't fit either of us. I'm not sure that I would ever redo it, at least out of clay. Maybe if I could find a way with metal. Eh. Oh, and TJ, the hand isn't from anything, it's just supposed to be creepy.

Here's the completed lock.. The eye didn't come out as neat as I wanted it to, but I'm satisfied enough with it.

And finally, the key. This thing was HELL to make. Dx Every little spiky thing took an hour or more to file down, not to mention how long it took to saw through such flimsy tubing (it moved around a lot while cutting). I'm actually quite disappointed in the outcome, honestly. I'm definitely redoing the eye and horns from scratch, the asymmetry and general bad-ness really bothers me, so I didn't bother attaching a chain to it. Though I'm crazy proud of the actual key part, that came out almost perfect.

Of course, Beth did do something to make up for all this:

Sorry for all the crappy pictures, I need to figure out how to make my camera not suck.

@Jer: One step ahead of you, there. I actually planned to start making stuff like this to sell at cons, and I'm using these as a portfolio for internet commissions and such.

SO HEY. If anyone here wants something metal-related, perhaps I could work in a special Spoony Friends discount.....
